“Things that shouldn’t offend you: profanity, the opinions of others, Jesus followers who smoke and drink. Things that should offend you: poverty, drone strikes, famine, daughters being bought and sold.”—Brett Thatcher (via h-o-r-n-g-r-y)
Hi. I want to make a tumblr post to help process what a lot of Torontonians — particularly Torontonian women — are feeling about what it is like right now to have this Mayor.
I don’t want any fat jokes and I don’t want any crack jokes and I don’t want any jokes at all, really. And while I am not…
It is the mayor’s supporters who are traumatic to me. That so many people are OK with domestic violence. That so many people will call a woman vicious names and threaten to hurt her if she discloses a sexual assault. That so many people will repeat horrible sexual slurs with no evidence. That reporters got rape and death threats for telling the truth about Ford.
That supporters demand infinite compassion for a man who hurts people, who assaults his wife, who assaults his colleagues, who stampeded up the City Hall stairs and elbowed a cameraman in the face. And that they don’t care about the wife, the colleagues, the cameraman. That Ford’s willingness to hurt people is part of what makes him “fun” or “real” to them, and if you don’t think so you’re “holier than thou”, you must think you’re “perfect.”
Ford Nation feels like this shadow Toronto, this parallel society of people who want to harm me and the people I care about. Not just through policy — actual physical harm. I did not know about these people.
And it upsets me that even left-wing men, progressive men, don’t get why it’s not okay to make degrading remarks about women’s genitals in public and reduce it to “being offended by a word.”
That even left-wing men, progressive men, more-progressive-than-thou men, forget the violence, and say they feel bad for Rob Ford, and they want him to get better, and they mean only the booze and the drugs.
That we’re told over and over again that Renata Ford should “just leave and take the kids” and it doesn’t stop no matter how many times we point out what awful things might happen to her if she did. No matter how many times we tell them what HAS happened to women who did and how the police and courts did jack shit to make it better.
That when I point out that jack shit has been done to make it better for so many other victims, people get angry — at me.
I’d say the mayor’s supporters are even more stupid and dangerous than he is.
